System Size: 100kW

Approximate produced energy per year: 138.0 MWh/year

Australian commercial solar is getting a little sweeter with the announcement of a new solar power initiative between Todae Solar and Capilano Honey. In pursuit of producing, “zero-carbon honey”, Capilano awarded Todae Solar a contract to build a 100kW commercial solar system on a packaging site in Maryborough, Victoria.

Reducing their carbon footprint is a key motivator for Capilano Honey, which already underwent measures to reduce their energy usage by 23% from 2015 to 2016. Energy efficiency is typically the first step in an organisation’s sustainability plan; often followed by a solar larger rollouts or multi-site rollouts as with Capilano Honey.

In a press release, Capilano Honey stated that they are, “dedicated to safeguarding the future of Australia’s honey bee population. Something that plays a huge role in protecting Aussie bees is promoting a clean, green environment.”

Through Todae Solar’s industry-renown excellence in engineering, they were able to increase the system capacity on over 350 270w solar panels. The system is expected to produce around 139,000kWh in its first year and a 20 year carbon abatement of 2,320 tonnes thanks to this initiative – putting them well on their way to realising their goal of carbon-neutral honey. Construction is set to commence at the end of February.
